These charts capture the real victims of poverty! Over 95% of the people we serve are very low income women with children and the elderly. They are living on fixed incomes that are simply inadequate. Many women are suffering from severe depression that is debilitating. They are dealing with issues like domestic abuse, substance abuse, behavioral health issues, homelessness, disabled children, and chronic illness.

HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL

ORGANIZED LOCALLY, VINCENTIANS WITNESS GOD’S LOVE BY EMBRACING ALL WORKS OF CHARITY AND JUSTICE. IN MARCH 2012, WE ESTABLISHED OUR CONFERENCE IN THE HEART OF THE MISSION HILL COMMUNITY. OUR CONFERENCE WAS OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED IN DECEMBER OF 2012. THE SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL, FOUNDED BY BLESSED FREDERIC OZANAM BEGAN IN PARIS IN 1833 AND STANDS AS ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE CHARITIES IN THE WORLD.

AS A YOUNG LAW STUDENT AT THE SORBONNE, OZANAM WAS CHALLENGED DURING A DEBATE TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT HE AND HIS FELLOW CATHOLIC STUDENTS WERE PERSONALLY DOING TO HELP THE POOR IN PARIS. WITHIN WEEKS, OZANAM AT 20 YEARS OF AGE AND SIX OF HIS PEERS FORMED THE FIRST “CONFERENCE OF CHARITY”. FINANCING THEIR WORKS OF CHARITY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS AND FROM CONTRIBUTIONS OF FRIENDS, THEY VISITED THE POOR IN THEIR HOMES, PROVIDING THEM WITH NEEDED AID AND ASSISTANCE. IN 1833 OZANAM PLACED THE CONFERENCE UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL WHO HAD SPENT HIS LIFE IN 16TH CENTURY FRANCE SERVING THE POOR. TODAY, THE SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL HAS AN INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE COMPOSED OF 690,000 MEN AND WOMEN, 50,000 CONFERENCES AND IS PRESENT IN 141 COUNTRIES AND TERRITORIES.

We serve the Greater Boston Area. While we do assist individuals, our main focus is on families with children. Our objective is family stabilization. “Sustainability” is the operative word. We help families establish household budgets that are realistic for their income. The vast majority of the people who come to us for service are  overwhelmed by their bills that they just stop paying them. However, even minimal payments can prevent shut-offs.

One request that, regrettably, we are not equipped to handle is for finding housing for our clients. We are able to assist with Security deposits
